Spider-Man has been through quite a lot of drama over the last few years – we’re talking getting recruited by Iron Man during the Avengers’ Civil War, being dusted by Thanos on an alien planet, having his secret identity outed in the press, and dealing with two major movie studios fighting over his screen rights. All Peter Parker really wants to do is hang out with his new girlfriend MJ! Well, it looks like he won’t have to worry too much about that because Zendaya has just been confirmed to be reprising her role as Michelle Jones in the untitled Spider-Man 3.
While doing the press tour for his latest movie, Pixar’s Onward, Spider-Man star Tom Holland had this to say when asked if Zendaya would be back to play MJ: “In ‘Spider-Man 3,’ Zendaya will most definitely be in the film. As to the relationship between Peter and MJ, I’m not too sure what it will be.”
If fans remember, Spider-Man: Far from Home left Peter Parker in quite a precarious position: His secret identity was revealed to the world by none other than Mysterio! The master of illusions doctored some footage of Spider-Man to make it appear as though he was responsible for the elemental attacks on London and other European cities and then leaked it to the Daily Bugle. Peter Parker is now a wanted criminal, and at the worst time too. He and MJ just became a couple!
After Spider-Man: Far from Home opened in theaters last summer, it not only became the highest grossing Spidey movie of all time but the highest grossing Sony movie of all time. Then, Marvel and Sony Pictures had their minor tiff while negotiating the shared movie rights to the webslinger. Fans wondered if they would be able to see how things turned out for the web head and his lady love, but the two mega studios came to a deal. Now everything is back on track for everyone’s favorite friendly neighborhood Spider-Man to swing into theaters for a 3rd outing plus one crossover flick, with the possibility for more – thanks, in part, to Tom Holland!
When asked about another Spidey movie happening after the studio kerfuffle, Holland replied: “Yes is the answer to that question. I’m super happy about it. We will be shooting ‘Spider-Man 3’ in July in Atlanta. As for me showing up in other Marvel movies, I’m not sure as to what they want me to do.”
A major aspect of the Spider-Man character as conceived by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and continued over the decades by many others, is his soap-opera-esque love life. Peter and MJ’s will-they-won’t-they romance, complicated by his responsibilities as Spider-Man, is a staple of both characters. It’ll be exciting to see where their relationship might lead over the next movie as they face these new challenges and hardships together. Either way, Spidey definitely still hit the jackpot.
