Though we won’t be getting an MCU movie this year – for the first time since 2009! – Marvel fans still have cause to celebrate. For instance, we got the first trailer for WandaVision, casting news for She-Hulk, and now an update from another upcoming Disney+ show: Canadian newcomer Iman Vellani will play Pakistani-American Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel!
While Ms. Marvel is Vellani’s first TV or film credit, she’ll at least be surrounded by an experienced crew. Just recently, a number of directors signed on to work on the show. Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Saving Face), Meera Menon (The Punisher), and Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi (the team who directed Bad Boys for Life) will all be lending their creative talents to the new show, which is huge, especially as Khan is the first Muslim hero in a Marvel TV show or movie.
As of now, the show doesn’t have a premiere date, which is probably a good thing since so many of the upcoming premieres are being pushed back anyway. With Marvel’s new Disney+ series interconnecting with the MCU, there is a good chance, we think, that Ms. Marvel could pop up in some of the Phase 4 films, like Captain Marvel 2. But as with all things Marvel-related, we’ll have to sit tight and see!
Kamala Khan hasn’t been around in Marvel Comics for a long time, but she’s certainly made an impact in the few years since her debut. She’s been popular with readers since she first appeared in Captain Marvel #14 back in August 2013, co-created by Sana Amanat, Stephen Wacker, G. Willow Wilson, Adrian Alphona, and Jamie McKelvie. In the comics, she’s a Pakistani-American teenager who lives in Jersey City, New Jersey who idolizes Carol Danvers and eventually discovers she has Inhuman genes. With that, she takes on the mantle of Ms. Marvel from Danvers when she becomes Captain Marvel.
We look forward to seeing what this series will bring and applaud Marvel for championing diversity on and off screen! As Stan Lee said, “We live in a diverse society — in fact, a diverse world, and we must learn to live in peace and with respect for each other.”
