Over the last 18 years, three actors have taken up the mantle of Spider-Man in live action films – Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland – and their performances have earned them special places in fans’ hearts.

In 2018, Miles Morales swung onto the movie scene in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which webbed up the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. In the film, an older version of Peter Parker takes Miles under his wing. While Jake Johnson lent his voice to the role, back in 2018 co-director Rodney Rothman revealed in an interview with Screen Crush that they considered none other than Maguire for the role.

If that had happened, fans would have clamored for cameos by Garfield and Holland as well. As it turns out, that thought occurred to the producers, too. During a ComicBook.com Quarantine Watch Party of Into the Spider-Verse, producer Chris Miller shared that they had devised an “ambitious tag” involving all three actors and Spider-Ham (John Mulaney), which didn’t end up getting the green light.

Rothman alluded to an idea like this – bringing together Maguire and others – in his conversation with Screen Crush.  “I think after this film, those thoughts might have a little more traction,” he said at the time. “But before this movie, and introducing the idea of the ‘Spider-Verse’ to the audience, I think everybody was afraid that it would just really confuse people. But wow, it would have been fun.”

And he’s not the only one who thinks highly of such an idea. Holland revealed in an interview last year while promoting Spider-Man: Far From Home that he’d love to make a movie with Maguire and Garfield. “It would be amazing, it would be really, really cool. And it’s something that the fans really want,” he said. Well, with the sequel to Into the Spider-Verse set for a 2022 release, anything could happen!
