Thor: Ragnarok (2017) was a complete shake-up for the God of Thunder’s status quo. Thor lost his hammer, his pals the Warriors Three, his father, and Asgard itself. What he gained was a completely new tone! Despite all the misfortune that befell ole’ Goldilocks in the third movie of his franchise, the flick was funnier than ever.

Fans can thank director Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople) for the Asgardian Avenger’s new style. The in-demand director has recently been making the press rounds for his new movie Jojo Rabbit and used the opportunity to drop some bits of news about the next Thor flick.

This past summer it was announced at San Diego Comic Con that Waititi would be returning for a fourth Thor movie, titled Thor: Love and Thunder. Not only will the film be the first time Marvel has done a fourth movie in a solo franchise, it will see the return of Natalie Portman as Doctor Jane Foster. The powerful panel also teased that Dr. Foster would be picking up the hammer and taking on the mantle of Thor herself, adapting a storyline from the comicbooks that started back in Thor #1 in 2014.

The comicbook storyline saw Foster not only taking on the title, powers, and responsibilities of Thor but battling breast cancer while in her human form. In a recent interview with Variety, Waititi was asked if this aspect of the storyline would make it into the upcoming film. The director responded by saying:

“I think that’s a really powerful part of the books. I think it’s really cool that she’s fighting this thing and there’s two battles going on. Personally, I really love that storyline. But whether it ends up in the film is yet to be seen. We’re not sure if we’re going to do a complete lift of that whole storyline. These things change through the shoot and even when we’re editing sometimes. Like, ‘Let’s get rid of that storyline where she’s got breast cancer.’ We’ll change it to something else, or maybe she’s fine.”

Not only did Waititi talk about Foster on the press tour, he also spoke about the fan favorite character he voices, Korg the alien! In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Waititi confirmed that the Kronan rock monster would be back in Love and Thunder.

“Yes I’ve finished a couple drafts of that story,” he said. “There’s more Thor! There’s twice the Thor! Twice the Thor in Thor 4!” He then confirmed that “my character is coming back, Korg” to raucous applause. Check out the video for yourself below:

The last time we saw Korg was in Avengers: Endgame (2019). He and his little slug buddy Miek were living on Earth in New Asgard and helping Thor through some rough depression. It’ll be interesting to see if they remain on our human-filled planet or venture back to the stars. Thor: Love and Thunder arrives in theaters on November 5, 2021.
