Even though the end of Thor: Ragnarok has Thor down an eye and down a hammer, he and Loki will be playing a big part in Infinity War. The question again is, “will they make it all the way through?”
Although Hemsworth seems to currently be at peace with the fact that his time as the God of Thunder may be coming to an end, he is not ruling it out forever.
“We felt like we reinvented the last one in a big way. It felt refreshed and re-energized. We might have a conversation if there’s another great script that comes along. But at the moment that’s it, I won’t be playing the character again,” he said.
There is still a lot to come from the next two films, so if he does make it through, perhaps there will be an open end, to keep the option for Hemsworth to return, if the planets align once more, so to speak.
He also said that if he did return down the line, it would be a conversation “further down the road.”
The end of Thor: Ragnarok also has Thor and Loki navigating what is left of the population of Asgard to earth to make a new home for themselves, so maybe that could serve as a way for Thor to be out of the action, but still available to avenge, after 2020.
Nothing is off the table, pending Thor’s survival of the upcoming Infinity War films. Some may remember that Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man contract had reportedly expired years ago, but he ended up renewing it and has now been playing the role for nearly a decade.
If this has happened with one Avenger, who knows what will happen with the others in the future.
You can see Thor’s (potentially, maybe, supposedly) last ride in Avengers: Infinity War, coming to theaters on May 4, 2018.
