This iconic scene from the first Iron Man shows exactly what it took to make a billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist fly. The strings are all green so that they are invisible when the final film released, of course. Now we know that RDJ was safely harnessed up with a crew member there to make sure he didn’t really fall on his face while testing the flight thrusters on his Iron Man suit.
Jon Favreau isn’t just the actor who plays the trusty driver of Tony Stark, Happy Hogarth, but he also directed the first two Iron Man films, so we can really call him the glue of the series! He was the one who really helped start the MCU. In this picture, we see Favreau giving some directorial advice to the newest cast member, Scarlett Johansson, who plays Agent Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow. Ah, the history!
By far, the most difficult scene to film in Iron Man 3 was the plane scene, where 13 people were falling in midair as Tony saved them in his Mark 42 suit. This scene was incredibly intense in the final cut of the film, so it makes sense that the filming aspect was just as intense. Here, we see RDJ with his usual mask/motion capture combo, plus all of the passengers midair. Nice to know that in a world of green screens, the crew chose to do this scene semi-on location. They couldn’t actually have them fall from the sky, after all, but this is the next closest thing!
