It’s Trivia Tuesday! Since we’re already a week into March, we decided to ask a question that pertains to this month. Here goes:
Which of these classic Marvel characters did not make their first comicbook appearance in the month of March, according to their debut issue cover date?
A. Iron Man
B. Black Widow
C. Captain America
D. Scarlet Witch
And the answer is…
B. Black Widow! One month off, she first bounded into the pages of Marvel Comics in Tales of Suspense #52 in April 1964 from the minds of Stan Lee, Don Rico, and Don Heck.
Our research proved that March was an especially fruitful month for future heroes to make their debuts. Aside from the ones listed, The Silver Surfer, Galactus, J. Jonah Jameson, and Carol Danvers all appeared in the pages of Marvel Comics for the first time in March during the 1960s.
Read on for some more information on the March characters mentioned in our trivia question.
Iron Man
Iron Man first landed in Tales of Suspense #39 in March 1963, meaning he celebrates his 60th anniversary this month! Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Larry Lieber (Stan’s brother), and Don Heck co-created the hero, with Steve Ditko designing the iconic Iron Man suit fans know and love a few issues later.
Captain America
Cap is particularly tied to the month of March. His first appearance came in his self-titled series, Captain America Comics, in March 1941, courtesy Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Then, 23 years later, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby revived the hero in The Avengers #4 in March 1964.
Scarlet Witch
Captain America returning to the comics wasn’t the only important thing that happened in March 1964! That same month, the Scarlet Witch AND Quicksilver made their entrances in The X-Men #4, introduced by the team of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
