Will Chris Evans Return as Captain America in a future MCU installment?

When Chris Evans was first cast as Captain America it caused a bit of a hubbub. You see, the actor had already played an iconic character from Marvel Comics: The Human Torch. The financially successful, but critically shaky Fantastic Fourfilms from the early 2000s were still fresh in everyone’s minds. Fans didn’t think Evans, who was primarily known for his comedic roles up until that point, could handle the stoic and noble star-spangled Avenger. But just like Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Iron Man, it’s now hard to imagine anyone other than Chris Evans playing Steve Rogers/Captain America.

Lucky for us, Chris Evans doesn’t seem to be completely shutting the door on reprising the role again somewhere down the line in a future MCU installment. In a recent conversation for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series, Black Widow herself, Scarlett Johansson, sat down with Chris Evans to talk about their careers, and the question came up of putting on his red, white, and blue uniform one more time.

After desperately trying to avoid answering the question, Evans said, “You know, you never say never. I love the character. It’s not a hard no, but it’s not an eager yes either. There’s other things I’m working on right now.” Chris explained that he’s very protective of the role and wouldn’t want to ruin it in any way, “I think Cap had such a tricky arc to stick the landing and I think they did a really nice job letting him complete his journey. If you’re gonna revisit it, it can’t be a cash-grab, it can’t be just because audiences would be excited. A lot of things would have to come together. It doesn’t feel at this time like that would be the thing that I’m looking to do.”

So, you’re telling us there’s a chance? After appearing in nine MCU flicks, which include (deep breath) Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), The Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019), it’s understandable that the star would want to give the character a rest and try new things. Don’t forget Chris Evans is also supposed to be reprising the role in voice only for the upcoming Marvel Disney+ animated series What If…? in 2021. So, don’t worry Marvel Zombies! There’s still one last bit of Chris Evan’s shield-throwing man-out-of-time on the horizon to tide you over. Excelsior!
