What could be a bigger problem for a superhero than a supervillain? How about SIX supervillains? That’s exactly what Tom Holland’s Spider-Man might be going up against in a future movie as teased in the special features of the Spider-Man: Far From Home DVD and Blu-ray release. To be fair, this is nothing outrageously new. It’s been rumored before, it’s been in development, it’s even been teased in a post-credits scene in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), but could we finally be seeing a Sinister Six flick in the not so distant future?
During a behind the scenes featurette for Spider-Man: Far From Home, producer Amy Pascal pointed out that all of the villains that Spider-Man has encountered in his two MCU solo movies have been part of the Sinister Six at some point or another in the comicbooks. In the video clip she states, “These villains we now have in our universe happen to be characters that are in the Sinister Six. There may be something that happens with that.”
As we mentioned above, the Sinister Six is a supervillain team that Sony has been eager to turn into a movie for quite some time. The creator of the Daredevil Netflix series and Academy Award nominated screenwriter Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods, The Martian) was hired by Pascal to write and direct a Sinister Six film back in 2013. Unfortunately, after the disappointing critical and box office results of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the Sinister Six movie was shelved.
The original Sinister Six was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 way back in 1964. In the story, Doctor Octopus puts together a team consisting of himself, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Sandman, and the Vulture to destroy the meddlesome web spinner once and for all. The squad of squabbling criminals has been a Marvel mainstay ever since, often changing up the roster of famous Spider-Man baddies in every subsequent incarnation.
So, which superpowered lawbreakers could be in this movie version of the Sinister Six, you ask? Well, the Spider-Man villains that we’ve met so far in the web head’s MCU movies are the Vulture, Shocker, Tinkerer, Scorpion, and Mysterio. There is also Tom Hardy’s Venom, who has been a part of the team in the comics and has been teased to cross paths with the webslinger on screen in the future. At this point we’d say that any of them are strong possibilities.
The Sinister Six is a classic team of supervillains that have plagued poor loner Spider-Man for almost as long as he’s been swinging through New York City in tights. It’s only a matter of time before we see this iconic group of bad guys organize to overpower the down-on-his-luck superhero.
