X-Men Producer Talks About Moving Forward With Channing Tatum’s Gambit Film

If you could snap your fingers and bring any comicbook character to life with their own solo film, who would it be? While there are many different answers, each with their own legitimate reason for happening, one that would probably get said more than most is Gambit. X-Men fans have been clamoring for a Remy LeBeau solo effort for what seems like forever, but no matter how close we seem to get to see one, something always happens.

It’s not as if we haven’t seen Gambit in a live action film. Taylor Kitsch starred as the Ragin’ Cajun in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but that wasn’t the best-received film, and what we really want is a full-length feature starring him. We finally had a Gambit film in pre-production with Channing Tatum as the lead, but it’s been placed on hold for the time being. It’s had at least three directors sign up to helm the film before deciding against it, and Gambit wasn’t included on Fox’s list of X-Men movies on the way during their presentation at CinemaCon. Still, X-Men franchise producer Simon Kinberg says the project is moving forward.

Kinberg discussed (Per ScreenRant) the Fox/Disney Deal and how its hold up pertains to the Gambit film, along with others recently…

“We haven’t had any discussions yet about what the Disney acquisition of Fox would look like for the Marvel properties because I think legally they’re not allowed to talk about it until it’s done. So, no, we haven’t talked about it all. We’re just moving forward as we move forward. Once Drew Goddard’s ready we’ll get into X-Force and, believe it or not, we’re still trying to get Gambit [starring Channing Tatum as the cajun mutant] up and running. The hope is to keep moving forward until we hear otherwise. To me, I have no idea what to expect but I think it could be really exciting.”

They’ve still been sticking to the June 2019 date for Gambit to hit theaters. While it seems like a long shot, crazier things have happened. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope we finally get this adaptation! Deadpool 2 is the next film from the X-Men Universe that will be in theaters on May 18th while The New Mutants and X-Men: Dark Phoenix are currently in reshoots. Both are slated for 2019 release dates.
