There are probably a few different reasons on why the next X-Men film’s release has been moved around more than a military brat, but regardless of which excuse is the actual reason to blame, there still seems to be a proverbial black cloud floating above Dark Phoenix. Between date changes, reshoots, and the less than stellar reception of X-Men: Apocalypse back in 2016, the hype for the next film featuring some of the most popular characters in Marvel Comics is lower than one would expect it to be. Even after Fox released the first trailer for Dark Phoenix the excitement was quickly dashed when it was announced soon after its premiere that the film had been pushed back to June 7th, 2019.
The thing about X-Men films, or any film in the comicbook genre for that matter, is if the studio, director, cast, and crew deliver a fantastic product, all is forgiven. That’s all any fan truly wants at the end of the day. Director Simon Kinberg did bring us some hope with the Dark Phoenix trailer, though. While we may have seen this storyline play out before, this one seems to have added in some key elements from the Mutant Universe that fans have been hoping to see for some time now, and with the additional time and the reshooting being handled to add in new elements, we may get back to a Days of Future Past type of reception from the masses. If you somehow haven’t seen the trailer yet, check it out…
Again, this isn’t the first time we’re going to see this storyline play out outside of the comicbook pages. Matter of fact, it won’t be the second time either. Not only was it covered in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, it was also an extended storyline in X-Men: The Animated Series during a nine-episode run during the 90’s. One clever fan and editor took clips from the cartoon and mixed it with the latest Dark Phoenix trailer to create a classic throwback with a new school flavor. Fans of the animated series will love this take, and those who weren’t around or even fans at the time can enjoy something different. Check it out below!
