Ever since Venom was announced, fans have been hoping and clamoring for the film to go all-the-way and pick up a well deserved R-rating. Deadpool and Deadpool 2 have proven that staying true to the character, even when it’s incredibly vulgar and violent, will reap the rewards both with the fans and at the box office. Logan also proved that you don’t have to sacrifice the story to do it either as the film earned a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards. James Mangold, Scott Frank, and Michael Green were all credited in the nomination.
It all really just boils down to if Sony wants to go that far, which it’s looking more and more like they may not be leaning that way. According to Variety‘s extensive report on Venom and the future of Sony’s Marvel films, they’ve said that the studio feels Venom should “push the very limits” of PG-13 but not go fully into the R-rated waters. Now that Disney has purchased many of 20th Century Fox’s assets, Sony is the last company with rights to Marvel properties outside of Disney and Marvel Studios. They may feel that taking Venom past a PG13-rating is too risky.
While that isn’t the best news for some fans, Sony has released a new still shot that gives us the best look at Venom that we’ve seen yet. The detailed look at the character is Venom in all of his glory. Courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, the Symbiote is as menacing as we hoped for when the film was announced, check it out below!
Tom Hardy also spoke to EW about Eddie Brock and the Symbiote coming together as one:
“They’re a bit lost in this world, and finding each other and negotiating an ethical framework is perhaps a gift and a burden for the two of them. They bring out the very best and the very worst in each other.”
The anticipation for Venom is building. Check it out in theaters on October 5th!
