It’s been a long time coming for any real material about X-Men: Dark Phoenix. The follow-up to 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse has had a long period of production, especially since the release date got postponed for several months from November of this year to February of next year. With the extra time, the team behind Dark Phoenix, including director Simon Kinberg, have been steadily doing re-shoots on the set in Montreal, Canada over the last few weeks. It seems that they are doing their very best to get the movie right and true to the comicbook source material.
We are only a few months away from release now, so it’s high time we got some inkling as to what exactly will be happening in the long-awaited X-Men installment. The creators of the film, in partnership with 20th Century FOX, agree!
Along with the trailer, the studio released an official synopsis for Dark Phoenix earlier this week to give the story a bit of context. You can read it below:
In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
Before this synopsis, we only had a few “First Look” images and concept art renderings, so this definitely puts the original material we have seen, like the image above, into much better perspective. As for the trailer, it seems that all of the mutants that Charles Xavier has taught along the way, along with his old friend Magneto, will be teaming up once more to try and save Jean from herself and the new cosmic villains that we have yet to witness the power of. Jessica Chastain’s villainous character, Smith also appears briefly in the trailer, making her role in this whole story all the more suspenseful.
This trailer is bound to be analyzed and unpacked by the legions of hyper-attentive X-Men fans out there, but in the meantime, ladies, gentlemen, mutants, and mortals, here is the first official trailer for the next movie in the X-Men saga, Dark Phoenix!
Now that the seal has been broken, the marketing material, behind the scenes featurettes, and other pre-release goodies are hopefully on their way for Dark Phoenix. The home stretch for all the X-Men fans out there is almost here!
X-Men: Dark Phoenix comes to theaters in just under five months, on February 14, 2019!
