It’s a good time to be a Star Wars fan, these days. The new films have given the millions of fans worldwide new movies to see and new characters to fall in love with, like the fans of old who got to see the previous two trilogies in theaters.
This year, we are traveling back in time in the galaxy far, far away with Solo: A Star Wars Story, followed by the final film in the new trilogy, but that’s the only thing happening. It’s been announced that Disney Parks is bringing the world of Star Wars to life in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
At D23 2015, we first got the news that we would be able to travel to the parks and experience a whole new level of adventure like never before. Since then, we’ve seen some concept art for the land, coming to both Disneyland and Walt Disney World, and even a miniature model. The construction has been underway, but we still haven’t seen or heard much about when it will be done, until now.
Last year, Disney Parks Blog revealed that the area will not be an exact replica of planets we’ve seen on screen, but a new planet named Batuu. Here is what Disney Parks Blog had to say about the immersive new land:
This remote outpost on the galaxy’s edge was once a busy crossroads along the old sub-lightspeed trade routes, but its prominence was bypassed by the rise of hyperspace travel. Now home to those who prefer to stay out of the mainstream, it has become a thriving port for smugglers, rogue traders and adventurers traveling between the frontier and uncharted space. It’s also a convenient safe haven for those intent on avoiding the expanding reach of the First Order. While Batuu may be new to us, it is clearly already familiar to many characters from the Star Wars saga as a stepping off point for epic adventures.
The land will still feature attractions with the places and people (and other races) that everyone knows and loves (and loves to hate). Guests will get to ride in the Millenium Falcon like Han and Chewbacca, and go to a cantina, not to mention multiple meet and greets with people characters from all around the galaxy.

The release date was originally set for this year, but maybe the folks at Lucasfilm are focusing on the two films coming out in the Star Wars universe, like Solo: A Star Wars Story, set to release in this weekend! However, just because completion may take a little longer than expected, doesn’t mean the process is not moving ahead!

It has officially been announced that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will be opening in the summer of 2019 at the Disneyland Resort and fall 2019 at Walt Disney World! This will fall right in time for the release of the final film in the newest Star Wars trilogy, set to release in December 2019. Until then, take a look at the newest concept art video and the announcement:
Maybe elements from the next two films will even be incorporated into the new lands, who knows. Either way, a release date is set, so the countdown begins! And also, check out the construction update video below from earlier this year:
