It’s been only a few months since the announcement of Sony’s different spinoff projected within the Spider-Man universe, and we have already learned a lot. Venom is the first film to branch out into this new Marvel film franchise, and with the box office numbers already breaking the record for highest October opening of all time, Sony is ready to continue the hot streak with its next film.
Buzz began immediately when Jared Leto confirmed his portrayal of Morbius the Living Vampire in an upcoming film produced by Sony, so it only upped the stakes when Venom producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad revealed that it would be the next film on the pipeline for the Spider-Man universe.
At the Venom premiere, Tolmach and Arad simply commented on the next project saying, “We’re obviously working on Morbius now. That’s sort of next up for us.” No casting has been announced apart from the titular role of Morbius, but we have learned that Daniel Espinosa (Life) will be directing the film and the script was penned by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama (Lost in Space,) so it is indeed coming together!
The film has locked down a director and screenwriter to helm it, the pre-production process is steadily moving forward. So much so, that the filming schedule has already been tentatively confirmed!
Arad and Tolmach explained that filming is set to begin very soon. In an interview with Collider, the producers said the following when asked about the filming date:
ARAD: “More or less, February?”
TOLMACH: “Yeah, the plan is early part of next year. We’re still working on it.”
While it’s still too soon to tell if a full-on Spider-Man appearance is on its way to the Sony films, that doesn’t mean that a further expansion into the Spider-verse isn’t a good idea. Both producers have also expressed great faith and excitement about Leto taking on the lead role, especially since a filming date for Suicide Squad 2 is still yet to be announced.
There is no set release date for Morbius as of yet, but keeping with this schedule, it could mean a release as early as winter 2019 or early spring 2020. In the meantime, we will catch back up with Peter Parker when Spider-Man: Far From Home premieres on July 5, 2019. As of right now, poor Spidey is a pile of dust thanks to Thanos, so if we ever want to see a Venom/Morbius/Spider-Man crossover, the first thing that will have to happen will be a miraculous resurrection in Avengers 4!
Onwards and upwards! Morbius is a welcomed addition to the steadily growing Spider-verse created by Sony.
