Sony Explains What’s Next for the Spider-Man Universe After ‘Venom’

Sony has become quite busy with the Spider-Man Universe since announcing Venom would be having his own story told with Tom Hardy starring as Eddie Brock and the titular character. It makes sense. With the buzz and expected success surrounding Venom, why wouldn’t they push to expand even further? Now, with Sony owning a reported 900 Marvel comic characters, they have plans to build their own Universe, something insiders are calling Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters or SUMC.

One of the first bits of information that’s come out, according to Variety, is Sony scrapping the plans for “Silver & Black,” a film that was supposed to chronicle the team of Silver Sable and Black Cat. While that may seem like bad news at first, it isn’t. The film is only being scrapped due to their want to give them each their own solo films instead of a team-up. “Silver & Black” could still happen after both characters are established.

Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures, and the executive who has been overseeing SUMC said to Variety:

“We’re focused on being faithful to the comics… We believe Black Cat is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film.”

Also, as was previously rumored, Sony is also moving forward with solo projects for both Silk and Nightwatch. While there’s no word yet about bringing Spider-Man back into the fold due to Sony’s deal with Marvel Studios, they are in the process of building the Universe of characters from his world. Panitch added:

“Spider-Man connects to a lot of the characters. There are villains, heroes, and antiheroes, and a lot are female characters, many of whom are bona fide, fully dimensionalized, and utterly unique. We feel there’s no reason the Marvel characters shouldn’t be able to embrace diversity.”

Now it looks like we can add Silver Sable, Black Cat, Silk, and Nightwatch to the growing list of characters Sony is working on projects for. Venom is coming on October 5th, and films surrounding Kraven and Morbius the Living Vampire are in development already!
