The first Spider-Man spinoff from Sony Studios is about to release, and although it seems like fans have waited a long time for Venom, the floodgates of content now seem to be open. This year, not long after Venom finished filming, Sony announced multiple plans to create an entire connected universe revolving around Spider-Man characters including Black Cat, Silk, Silver Sable, and Morbius, the Living Vampire. So far, plans for all these projects have been up in the air, but now that Venom is on the verge of release, it is time to look to the future.
This week, the Venom team did their final round of press at the Los Angeles premiere for the film, and of course, a question or two was directed at the future of the Marvel roster that Sony intends to create. Producers for Venom, Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad, were actually happy to reveal the next project on the Sony roster, despite big studios usually binding their upcoming films to a code of secrecy.
The producers said, “We’re obviously working on Morbius now. That’s sort of next up for us.”
For those not caught up with all Spider-Man comicbook lore, Morbius the Living Vampire is a supporting villain/anti-hero who will be getting his time in the spotlight as portrayed by Jared Leto. The character has been prevalent in the comicbooks periodically since 1971 as a villain and sometimes has been an ally of the web-slinger. The film was announced earlier this year and confirmed by Leto himself on social media.
The producers went on to praise Leto and his acting abilities, saying that they expect “awesomeness” from the Oscar winner as well as “just a similar level of intensity and charisma and devotion to the character,” as he had when he played another comicbook villain, the Joker, in 2016’s Suicide Squad.
The producers concluded by saying that Leto “loves the character,” so it seems that the casting was a good move by Sony. It is unclear whether or not filming will begin soon or if the producers’ statement simply suggests that pre-production is underway, but regardless, it seems apparent that the Morbius film will be the next release on the Sony Studios Marvel docket. The Venom franchise is also expected to produce sequels, so we will just have to see which one begins production first, Morbius or a second Venom film!
Either way, it looks like Sony Studios is moving full speed ahead in a bid to create an intertwined universe of comicbook characters on par with our very own MCU!
