In this strange time as MCU fans, after the events of Infinity War and a bunch of heroes turning to dust, we can only look to the future with the hope that all will be fixed, or at least partially fixed. The biggest piece of hope we have is the knowledge that sequels are supposed to happen in the coming years, and many of the stars still have films left to make in their contracts. There’s still hope that people like Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Bucky Barnes will return!
In this downtime, Sebastian Stan has been talking about his time in the MCU and just how he has gotten to this point. With four starring roles in Marvel movies under his belt, Stan has really come into his own as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier/White Wolf, but that was not his original plan.
Stan spoke with CNBC and explained how he had originally auditioned for the role of Captain America. As we know, that role was given to Chris Evans, launching him into permanent heartthrob status, but that doesn’t mean that this was a sad story for Sebastian Stan. The casting directors ultimately told Stan that “he was not right for the part,” but they still ended up giving him the role of Barnes, which has proven to be equally rewarding for the actor.
In fact, Stan wouldn’t have it any other way. Although he didn’t end up being Steve Rogers, he said that it all “worked out.” He also said that Barnes was a “much better role.”
With the transformation from a sidekick, to a superpowered killer, to being a strong ally to the forces of good once more, the road that Bucky Barnes has traveled has definitely had its ups and downs. Fast forward to now and Stan is a pivotal part of the MCU, and hopefully will continue to be.a part of it moving forward, that is if the remaining Avengers can reverse the effects of the Infinity Gauntlet.
In the end, Stan did not take the rejection too hard. When asked about how he dealt with the news of the initial rejection from Marvel and in the acting world, Stan said the following:
“Try not to take things personally, learn how to face rejection, no matter what you do, stay obsessed with it.”
The careful casting process of the MCU also changed the fates for the actors in the Thor series. Tom Hiddleston had originally auditioned for the role of the God of Thunder but was instead offered the role of Loki and Thor was given to Chris Hemsworth. Legions of Loki fans will agree that Hemsworth was the better choice for Thor and Hiddleston was perfectly cast in his role as Loki. In fact, Stan also seems to be doing swimmingly as Bucky Barnes instead of Cap.
Sebastian Stan is only four films into his nine-film contract, so there’s still hope for his return from the dust of Thanos’ making!
