Ron Howard Explains Why He Used Who He Did For The ‘Solo’ Surprise Cameo

Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY AHEAD. IF YOU DO NOT WANT THE BIGGEST SURPRISE OF THE MOVIE SPOILED, LEAVE THIS ARTICLE NOW… WE’RE TALKING ABOUT IT!

There is nothing better than going to see a film featuring some of your favorite characters and something happening in the movie that leaves you shocked and in complete disbelief. OK, that may be a bit of hyperbole, but we can all admit that a good surprise is incredibly exciting. With blockbuster films dominating the past month and a half, it’s a surprise in itself that they were all able to bring something shocking to the table that wasn’t leaked prior to them opening. That goes for Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, and now Solo: A Star Wars Story.

With Solo, SPOILER ALERT, the big reveal came at the end of the film when we finally find out who’s the true leader of the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate. While Dryden Vos may have been the figurehead we saw, we knew he had a boss, and that boss ended up being none other than Darth Maul. Many people who are strictly fans of the movies weren’t even aware Maul survived his fight with Obi-Wan Kenobi at the end of The Phantom Menace so the surprise to see him when Qi’Ra takes over Dryden’s role after killing him was a complete blindside.

If you’re in that group, let’s go over a quick breakdown of how that went down. After having his legs chopped off in battle, Lucasfilm Animation brought him back during the fourth season of The Clone Wars. His story shows he survived by using the force to escape the reactor shaft and ended up on the junkyard planet, Lotho Minor. Having lost his Duel with Kenobi, Maul would be placed in exile, before his subsequent return.
