How do you film a superhero movie with upwards of 76 characters (not including extras) coming together, put $150 million dollars of marketing money behind it, send your stars on a press tour, and not have any of the most important plot details spoiled for the public? Before we answer that question, let’s first understand how important it is to do, both for the enjoyment of the film but also for the success of it. So how is it done? Simple. Trick them all!
The level of secrecy surrounding Avengers: Infinity War has been documented all throughout the lead up to its release in two weeks, but we may not have even known how deep the rabbit hole goes in terms of keeping everyone quiet… At least until now. Now that the stars of Infinity War are on their press tour to promote the film, the depth to how secret the Russo Brothers kept details, even with the actors.
If we thought Joe and Anthony [Russo] we’re going to the limit with their “No Spoilers featuring Thanos” tweet, imagine being one of the starring actors and not knowing what’s actually going on. During an interview, which you’ll see the entirety of below, Paul Bettany reveals that the cast was actually given scripts to throw them off the scent of what was really going on…
“The secrecy around this film extended, this time, to the cast. It was crazy. We had, we read fake scripts or they had fake twists and scenes that didn’t get shot.”
This revelation, along with the known fact that Tom Holland wasn’t given a complete script, shows just how dedicated Joe and Anthony Russo have been to make this event a surprise for everyone.
