It’s no secret that the MCU is moving full speed ahead with its schedule, even after a massive film event like Infinity War. The show must go on, and that couldn’t be truer for the gang at Marvel Studios. There’s a wealth of material to pull from, with hundreds of Marvel characters that have yet to make their big screen debut, so the real question is, “Who will come to the MCU next?”
It has already been reported that Kevin Feige and the other creators at Marvel Studios are already planning for films many years into the future, far past Avengers 4. As far as we know, there is supposed to be a Guardians 3 in 2020, as well as a Black Panther and Spider-Man sequel. This lineup of films is tentative and only a glimpse of what the future of the MCU is.
With the universal success of Black Panther and now Avengers: Infinity War (the film just reached a worldwide gross of almost $2 billion and is still growing), it seems that other actors are looking to get in on the action.
Orlando Bloom, for instance, expressed his willingness on joining the roster of talented actors in the MCU. Bloom is not at all a stranger to universally acclaimed fantasy film franchises. Two of his earlier roles were major parts in both the Lord of the Rings series and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Bloom recently reprised both his iconic roles of Legolas and Will Turner, but now it looks like the English actor is setting his sights on Marvel.
The actor spoke with BBC2 radio about the current state of the MCU and he even revealed that he had once been in talks to maybe play a part in them, saying:
“All the Marvel movies are just phenomenal. You know, I really think it’s about timing, I’ve not [been asked] but I’ve met [with people] over there, but it’s sort of one of those things where I took a lot of time out to raise my son, and after being in a big franchise [Pirates Of The Caribbean] it was more about wanting to be there for him. ‘ figured when he turns around to me when he’s 10 and he’s like, ‘Where were you?’ [I didn’t want that to happen].”
Bloom also talked about potential comicbook character roles he would want to play and suggested a pretty cool character, Captain Britain…
“I do read [Marvel comics] a little bit. Who’s the British one? Captain Britain! There you go. Terrible costume though, and also you’ve got Captain America so what you going to do? Captain Britain vs. Captain America.”
For those who may not know, Captain Britain is a scientist turned superhero, created by Alan Moore and debuted in 1976. He has appeared in his own series many times since then and also has featured appearances in other characters’ series including Spider-Man, the Avengers, and the X-Men, to name just a few. As of now, the character is relatively unexplored, but that could make him the perfect lead for an upcoming film.
The future of the MCU is really anybody’s guess right now. But if there’s anything we’ve learned from the first 10 years, it’s that the creative decisions are always thoroughly thought out and calculated. So, if Captain Britain ever does indeed come to life, and with Orlando Bloom playing the role, it will be the right move!
Until then, Ant-Man and the Wasp will be the next entry into the MCU and will hit theaters on July 6, 2018.
