WARNING – This article contains spoilers for Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Ant-Man and the Wasp opened in theaters around the country last weekend (July 6th) and quickly rose to number one at the box office. While its totals came in significantly lower than Avengers: Infinity War, which is understandable and expected, its $76 million domestic total was about $20 million higher than 2015’s Ant-Man. Its $161 million worldwide total was also 45% higher than its predecessor, and it is still yet to open in France (7/18), Germany (7/26), UK (8/2), Italy (8/14) and Japan (8/31) due to the World Cup being played.
While some aren’t into the numbers, we explain them to look at the character’s popularity growth over the last three years. It seems that after the success of the first film, his appearance in Captain America: Civil War, and notable absence from Infinity War, fans are really starting to get behind Scott Lang. Because of this, we wanted to take some time to explain some of Ant-Man’s powers that the casual fan may not be aware of. There’s a long history behind him, and we’re likely to see more of his abilities in upcoming films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
He Can Communicate With More Than Ants
Let’s start with the basics…It’s widely known that Ant-Man can talk to ants. If you didn’t know that, you don’t know Ant-Man at all, but the truth is that he can actually communicate with all insects through EMP Communication Device, better known as the Ant Training Device. Its range goes up to one mile.
Powerful Voice Control
In most cases, if something were to shrink down to the size of an ant, their voice would also shrink. This isn’t the case with Ant-Man, as his helmet allows for him to amplify his voice and keep it at normal human levels. This explains why it’s easy for him to talk to other people during battle when he’s shrunk in the films.
One of the coolest things about ants is their ability to lift things much heavier than their actual weight. Their enhanced strength is also a part of Ant-Man, and in battle, it allows him to do the same damage as he would at his normal size. On the flip-side, when he grows larger, his strength increases exponentially as you would expect it to with a larger being. This allows him to have his cake and eat it too!
