The Defenders of Netflix’s Marvel TV universe are back with a vengeance this year. First was the second installment of Jessica Jones, which premiered in March. Then the summer brought with it the second season of Luke Cage in late June, and now we are approaching the second season of Iron Fist, which starts in about five weeks.
The series, starring Finn Jones as the titular character, served as a starting point for the joint series that was The Defenders, which premiered last year.
In the second season, Danny Rand and Colleen Wing are picking up where we left off. The Hand has been defeated, as far as we know, but Rand’s fellow martial arts warrior named Davos (a.k.a. Steel Serpent) is now on the hunt for him. Since both characters learned to fight in the mystical land of K’un L’un, Davos will be a formidable opponent.
Until now, we hadn’t seen much in regards to what would be in store for this next season. A presentation at San Deigo Comic-Con last week revealed a new teaser trailer showing Rand fighting some thugs in an alley and provided an official release date but didn’t provide much in terms of plot points. This week, a new trailer for the upcoming season dropped, and it finally gives us a glimpse of what new battles Iron Fist will have to face come September.

In the trailer we see Rand and Wing walking down the street when Rand has visions/memories of rituals performed in K’un L’un, fighting Davos, and his fighting trainers. This still doesn’t give us a huge inkling of what will be happening next season, especially since at the end of the trailer he resolves all the visions to be “bad memories.”
One thing that the trailer does briefly show, however, dream or otherwise, is Rand sporting the iconic Iron Fist mask that has been seen in the comics for decades. Fans have been speculating since the show’s inception whether or not the character’s costume would ever be the traditional comicbook garb, despite the more modern setting of the series.
It is unclear if this depiction was a memory, a type of dream, or some type of foreshadowing for the upcoming season, but the classic Iron Fist mask appearing in the show at all is a big win for comicbook loyalists out there! Check out the newest trailer below:
In addition to the Steel Serpent, the villain seen here, actress Alice Eve has signed on to play Typhoid Mary, another longtime Marvel comicbook villain. Hope Danny Rand’s Chi is all in order because he is going to need that glowing fist for this season more than ever!
