This week, members of the cast of Black Panther reunited for the MTV Movie and TV Awards after being nominated for several awards. The night went wonderfully for the Wakandans as they won almost every award they were nominated for, including Best Movie, Best (Acting) Performance in a Movie, and more. Although it may not have been the most serious of awards shows, it was the first one to happen since the release of Black Panther, and it also showed that fans all over the world are still rooting for the movie!
One of the awards Black Panther received was Michael B. Jordan winning Best Villain for his portrayal of Erik “Killmonger” Stevens. The actor received his Golden Popcorn on stage to a thunderous applause. In his acceptance speech, Jordan spoke about how he enjoyed playing the role of Killmonger even though it “took a lot to kinda get into this character.”
With the amazing fan response to all the characters in the film, it’s the natural next step to think about the future. Regardless of the nightmare that was the ending of Infinity War, there’s a lot to be excited about. Avengers 4 will likely begin where Infinity War left off in Wakanda, so we will have some key moments over there. Hopefully, the people we lost (like T’Challa!) will be resurrected somehow, and then we can look to the Black Panther sequel.
Kevin Feige had already expressed his interest in bringing back Ryan Coogler to direct the sequel after his masterful job on the first film. Michael B. Jordan knows that a second round of Coogler’s vision of Wakanda would be a good thing, even if his character isn’t in it. Or is he?
On the MTV Movie Awards red carpet, Jordan spoke with Josh Horowitz of MTV about his potential future in the MCU since his first time in it was so successful. While it’s too early to know anything for sure, this is what the actor said about potentially returning as Killmonger (or any other character) in another MCU film:
“I mean, I’m a fan, as you said, of Marvel, of comic books, everybody knows that. So I mean if there was ever an opportunity for me to come back and like join this universe and work with like Joe Russo, Kevin Feige, Victoria [Alonso], and everyone over there at Marvel, re-team with Ryan [Coogler] you know, of course I would.”
The death of Killmonger was pretty absolute so it would be a bit of a feat to bring him back. However, with Bucky Barnes being resurrected after falling to his snowy death and Captain America surviving after being frozen in ice for 70 years, it’s safe to say that anything can happen in the MCU. Hey, Loki has been “killed” multiple times as well, so if he can come back, why can’t Killmonger?
First thing’s first, let’s make sure there even is a future for Black Panther. As of right now, T’Challa is still a pile of dust from Thanos. No offense to Killmonger and Michael B. Jordan, but as far as resurrection goes, T’Challa is first on the list!
