Marvel is furthering its televised reach with a brand new show based on the early 2000’s comicbook series known as Runaways. The first trailer, shown during a panel at New York Comic Con 2017, revealed a November 18th release date on Hulu. Runaways will be Marvel TV’s initial attempt to appeal to a younger, teen-aged viewership, and will be followed by adaptations of late 80’s teen superhero team, The New Warriors, as well as Cloak and Dagger (on Freeform).
The story follows an eclectic gang of six teenagers named Alex, Chase, Gert, Karolina, Molly, and Nico. Once a year, they all would accompany their parents to a gathering at Alex’s house. For years, the kids were confined to the estate and the parental meetings were kept secret until curiosity got the best of them. Using a secret passage discovered in the house’s game room, the teens wander inside to spy on the meeting between their parents, expecting to find nothing of interest. Upon seeing the adults cloaked in super-villainous garb, ritualistically sacrificing a young girl, the band of teens are shocked to learn that their parents are an evil syndicate known as The Pride.
Later stories are filled with instances of super-powered battles, vampires, old deities (The Gibborim), mysteries, and an actual dinosaur living in a secret room in Gert’s house. The dino, who wears a nose ring, would later be named Old Lace and become a bestial companion to the Runaways, Gert in particular. There is a hint of his presence in the teaser trailer.
