Some of the most innovative forms of musical output are based on a free-floating concept, swirling out from the mind of the creative person. It takes a kind of necessary structure to really trim the fat off of a storyline. This can go for any artistic medium whatsoever, but thanks to The Weeknd and Marvel, their crossover can bring the initial idea by Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd) to life through comicbook panels. In 2016, The Weeknd sent his Starboy album out to the music listening public, and it struck a nerve in the Hip-Hop/Pop world for its braggadocios nature in its lyricism and collaborative songwriting efforts (most notably with Parisian house/electronic duo, Daft Punk). The album itself has recently reached double platinum.
It laid the proper structural groundwork for the upcoming 2018 comic featuring the likeness of The Weeknd as the titular hero known as “Starboy.” Leading up to New York Comic Con 2017, the artist teased his fans on his Instagram and Twitter accounts with several illustrations of himself (in parts) inside bright orange blocks until the final reveal as shown below:
The Canadian recording artist has certainly built up the hype long enough. Music and comicbook fans can look forward to the first issue next year, as well as Tesfaye’s further explanation of the concept of this new series. When interviewed by Pigeons and Planes about the origin of the main character and Marvel’s involvement, he stated: “Starboy is the next chapter in this chronicle, this saga,” and continued, “I guess this is the fourth chapter. He’s a character that we created. It’s so funny, we want to create a comic out of him, as well. He’s a cool, dope character that makes appearances a lot on the album. He’s definitely made his appearance in different records in the past, as well. He’s a more braggadocios character that we all have inside of us.”
As an added bonus, here is a picture of The Weeknd with Todd McFarlane (Spawn). Enjoy:
