On May 2nd, 2008, Marvel Studios released its first feature film about a character that was relatively unknown to the general public, starring a critically acclaimed actor with a checkered past. To say that nobody knew what the future held would be an understatement. That film would go on to be a trilogy and the flagship franchise for the studio, and that actor would grow to embody everything that is Tony Stark. What Robert Downey, Jr. is to Iron Man, Iron Man is to the MCU, and a decade later there is still so far to go!
While Iron Man may have gotten the ball rolling, there have been so many films and so many actors that have helped propel the Marvel Cinematic Universe to where it is today. Because Iron Man was so successful, even though the casual fan wasn’t already personally invested with the character like a Wolverine or Spider-Man, it allowed the studio to have confidence in films like Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, and Black Panther. It showed that if you make an entertaining film with characters that fans can get behind, it will work. Somewhere the Field of Dreams voice is talking right now.
The one thing that Marvel Studios has understood is that, ultimately, it’s about the fans. With any form of entertainment, whether that be comicbooks, film, music, or whatever, if the people enjoy themselves, they’ll come. And because they’ve shown up, in droves nonetheless, Marvel Studios has been able to continue to make films, and as we approach the 19th one to hit theaters, they’ve gathered up all of our favorite actors from those films to say a few words…
On April 27th, Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters, and while it may be the most ambitious project to date, the future of the MCU is still incredibly bright. We, along with you all (hopefully), look forward to seeing how it all plays out!
