How Marvel Studios Can Retcon Scarlet Witch As A Mutant In The MCU

With time seemingly being the only factor preventing the inclusion of the properties that Disney acquired in its purchase of 20th Century Fox assets making their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans can do nothing but wait patiently. How and when it actually happens is purely speculation at this point, but with Bob Iger’s public comments being positive, we all have tempered excitement. The only thing we can do right now is imagine all of the different possibilities that would be possible with the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool making their way into the MCU.

One of the more interesting problems to present itself in the merge, if we want to call it that, would have to do with characters that are used in both Fox and Marvel Studios films like Wanda and Pietro Maximoff. While Pietro/Quicksilver died in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Wanda turning to dust after Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Infinity War, it may not matter, but if Scarlet Witch is brought back in Avengers 4 somehow, her history could need to be adjusted. Luckily for fans, it looks like Marvel Studios has left open the possibility for her Mutant history from the comics can be retconned into the MCU.

In Marvel Studios’ first published Visual Dictionary, they devote a paragraph to Scarlet Witch’s powers which leave their origin open. With the way it’s explained, the Mind Stone and her Mutant DNA can both be factors in her strength:

“She may be called Scarlet Witch, but Wanda’s powers aren’t derived from the occult. Whether it altered her or merely unlocked something latent inside Wanda, the Infinity Stone on Loki’s scepter bestowed incredible powers of the mind. Wanda’s internal neuro-electric interface allows her to conjure blasts of red telekinetic energy. She can also use this energy to create barriers, levitate and move objects; to communicate and read thoughts by telepathy; and even to manipulate the minds of others.”

The simple statement of “Whether it altered her or merely unlocked something latent inside…” is all they needed to open up her history. How and when they’ll do so is still up in the air, but the fact that Magneto could still become her father in the MCU is all of the hope we need!
