Comicbooks and fantasy are excellent for many different reasons, and they’re responsible for some of the greatest debates and discussions held between friends in the history of language. Sure, that may be hyperbole at its finest, but can you honestly say that you don’t enjoy breaking down your favorite heroes and villains ad naseam with like-minded people? There are often times where we get into hypotheticals and speculation, and the debates go as far as the imagination allows them to.
Kevin Smith and Marc Bernardin are the co-hosts of the popular podcast Fatman on Batman, now titled Fatman Beyond. On the podcast, held at the Scum and Villainy Cantina in Hollywood, Smith and Bernardin have a segment where they bring fans from the audience up to ask questions. In return, if the question is good and both men can answer, the fan wins some sort of prize. Many times the fans will ask hypothetical questions in which Smith and Bernardin have to go deep into their wealth of nerd-knowledge and imagination to answer. This past episode was no different as the pair was asked to select teams of five, heroes vs. villains, and they can select their team using any fictional characters they can think of.
This isn’t the first time the two have done one of these fantasy battles, and it likely won’t be the last, so they decided to go another way than just selecting the most powerful characters they can think of. They also decided to make up their own rules as they went, but that’s what makes this debate fun. Kevin opened the selections with Jesus, because, well… Jesus. Marc followed up by selecting Death. The selections started to get pretty shifty in the 3rd round when Kevin selected Thanos to Team Hero by saying, “Controversial choice, Thanos. From a certain perspective, he’s a hero. He could have literally wiped out everybody with one snap. I call that mercy.”
Marc followed that up with a very calculated selection before Kevin jumped the shark again by selecting Darth Vader to Team Hero and justified it by saying, “He went good, eventually.” Marc responded with acceptance of the choice and said, “He did. At the end of that story, for like eight minutes.” They go into much more detail and have some other hilarious choices in the podcast. Check out the full debate in the video below, just be warned… as with anything Kevin Smith is a part of, parts of it are NSFW. They definitely use adult language throughout the talk. The debate starts at 1:03:00 of the video…
