The closer we get to the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp (July 6th for those who haven’t been paying attention), the more we feel like the Quantum Realm is going to have far-reaching effects across the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If it wasn’t going to, it wouldn’t be this big of a topic throughout the promotion and marketing of the film. That isn’t said as if there’s something wrong with it, quite the contrary, it just has us speculating as to what effect it will actually have. Will it help Earth’s Mightiest Heroes defeat Thanos in the still untitled fourth installment of The Avengers?
In 2015’s Ant-Man, Dr. Hank Pym describes the Quantum Realm as “a reality where all concepts of time and space become irrelevant as you shrink for all eternity.” This has led us, as well as many other fans, into believing that the Avengers will find a way to use it as a means to traverse space and time, but as /film pointed out to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, if time and space become irrelevant, how is it that Janet van Dyne has aged while being trapped in it?
During an interview with /film, Feige addressed their question about this exact issue, and he explained:
“Much like quantum mechanics itself, it is all very complicated. And it is…there are various [areas] you notice in this film. Scott Lang says meet me in the Wastelands beyond the Void. There are various levels that we check in on. So there are many, many different layers to the Quantum Realm.”
