‘Iron Man’ Writer Shares His Thoughts On Which Avenger Bites The Bullet In ‘Avengers 4’

The stakes have never been greater and the odds have never been longer as our remaining heroes prepare to avenge the universe in the upcoming, still untitled, Avengers 4. Knowing all of the sequels on the docket, it’s hard to imagine a world where none of the characters that were affected by Thanos’ snap come back, but even if some, or all of them, do there’s a high likelihood that we lose another one of our favorite heroes in the process. Many fans look at whose contracts are up, and the thought of losing any one of those actors’ characters is a dark one.

We already know there’s going to be a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and Black Panther, right? So, let’s assume they’re coming back, along with the Guardians of the Galaxy since their trilogy film is also scheduled, but there’s one Guardian we’re still uncertain about. Gamora wasn’t killed by the snap; she was sacrificed by Thanos for the Soul Stone. Many believe that she’s actually trapped in the Stone Soul’s realm and saveable, so maybe she will make it back. Loki, on the other hand, is unlikely to return as he was just killed in battle. So, if we get back many of the major players in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, how do the Russo Brothers make sure the stakes of Avengers 4 meet the shock and awe of Avengers: Infinity War? One man has an idea…

During an interview with the Tampa Bay Times, Iron Man comic writer Bob Layton shared his thoughts on raising the stakes in Avengers 4 and his belief that Tony Stark would meet his demise in the film, saying:

“That is one way of doing it, but I’d only be guessing. I know this — I wouldn’t want to recast Tony Stark. Who would want to try to top Downey? But, if Tony doesn’t come back, they can put somebody else in the armor and start a new generation of Iron Man.”

Could we be seeing the last of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark? The thought alone has us upset, but one thing is for sure… We’ll all find out what happens when Avengers 4 opens in theaters next May!
