Deadpool 2 delivered in a way that almost all sequels can only dream of. Not only were they able to capture all of the humor, violence, and heart of the first film, they were also able to add more depth to their lead and supporting cast of characters. They did this not only in size, adding Domino, Cable, Yukio, and Firefist to his squad, they also added more dimensions to the characters we met during the first film.
While Wade Wilson is an incredibly complex anti-hero, regardless of what he attempts to make us believe, his buddy Colossus is a pretty straightforward hero. The perception that we had coming into this film was the straight-laced character went about his hero business one way and one way only, with honor and integrity. While that may be true, his opponent in Deadpool 2 forced his hand in terms of his personal rules of engagement. When you’re up against someone or something as brutally savage as Juggernaut, you better be ready for anything.
Editors Note: We finally feel comfortable discussing Juggernaut now that 20th Century Fox has released official photos of him!
The CG battle between Colossus and Juggernaut was most certainly one of the highlights of the film. Two enormous characters with raw strength going head to head like they did was a comicbook fan’s dream, but in this dream, it seemed as if Colossus was in over his head. Dan Glass, the film’s production VFX supervisor explained that Colossus being overmatched was actually the key to get him to go where we never expected him to go. Per IndieWire, “He grabs the fence post and stabs him in the eye and the groin,” added Glass. “He gets down to Deadpool’s level.”
By the end of the film it looks like while Deadpool’s X-Men buddies are still trying to make a hero out of the Merc with a Mouth, he’s actually rubbing off on them as well. The X-Force film is looking more and more promising by the day. Also, how about a Deadpool 3?
