Creators and artists can find inspiration in some of the most interesting places, and as much as everyone wants to believe that Hollywood is made up of a bunch of money-hungry executives and business people, the fact is that the content always starts out as an idea by a creator. Whether or not those ideas make it to the screen is another story.
Some films are created from an original screenplay, while others are adaptations of something we’ve seen or read prior. One of the growing genres of film adaptations come from the world of video games. While this may not be new to Hollywood, it does seem to be happening more frequently. The latest game to be transformed into a live-action feature film will be none other than Mega Man. Debuting on Nintendo in 1987, the titular character would battle other robots that had weaponry and abilities that match their names. Honestly, it’s surprising that this one hasn’t happened already.
In honor of this adaptation being rumored to happen, we want to take a trip down memory lane and remember some of our favorite films based on video games in the history of cinema. Check them out below!
The Tomb Raider Series and the Reboot
We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the Tomb Raider films first. Lara Croft has been such a large figure in the world of pop culture since the 90’s, it would be a disservice to not mention both the original films starring Angelina Jolie and the reboot starring Alicia Vikander. Coincidentally, both Lara Croft’s are Oscar-winning actresses!
Mortal Kombat was such an enormous phenomenon since it’s debut in 1992 that it was only a matter of time before it got adapted to the screen. The film, although probably not considered the greatest movie ever made, was a massive success at the box office and holds a special place in history.
