When Ryan Reynolds and company finally got to create the first stand-alone Deadpool film, many people wondered if they would be able to pull it off. Well, they did, and fans showed up in droves to see the movie in 2016.
While some people were concerned about its rating, that ultimately didn’t deter fans from coming out to see the Merc with the Mouth; in fact, Deadpool recorded the biggest R-rated opening weekend ever, making $132.7 million in the US and a total of $300 million worldwide over a long four day holiday weekend.
With such a successful debut, it was only a matter of time before a sequel was announced.
