Early Screen Test Of Robert Downey Jr. Shows The Man Who Would Become Tony Stark

The illustrious universe of films from Marvel Studios that we know today is the product of more than 10 years of hard work and creativity. The same way Disney started with a mouse, the MCU all started with a suit. The Iron Man Suit to be exact.
Back in 2008, the first Iron Man film came to theaters starring Robert Downey Jr., who was then an actor that Marvel Studios had taken a great gamble on to cast. The film could have fallen into the sub-par category of superhero films that plagued many of the other 2000’s tries by both Marvel and DC, especially if the leading role was miscast or not well received.
As fans know now, the film was the start of an ever-growing and universally poignant new universe of Marvel characters. In the 10 years that have passed since the first “The truth is… I am Iron Man,” it has been interesting to see how much the actor and the character he portrays have grown and evolved with the universe. What started as a genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist has become the favorite character of millions, and so much more.

The casting of a lifetime was in part brought to us by the director Jon Favreau, as well as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who seems to have had a great vision for the MCU from the beginning.

Now, over six movies later, when the fate of Tony Stark and the rest of humanity is in the balance thanks to Thanos, it is a good time as any to see where the character began. The original screen test for Tony Stark shows a much more serious version of the character, minus much of the playboy charm that we know him for today.

As you can see, the foundation is there, but it took a little more work with the director and rest of the cast to figure out exactly how RDJ would bring out Tony Stark’s personality. The finished film brings us the wit and subtle comedic tone that has since become synonymous with Stark. This screen test was taken in 2006, so for a first draft, it could be a lot worse.

And the rest is MCU history…
