Disney And Marvel Studios Reveals Which Oscar Categories ‘Black Panther’Is Campaigning For

Those of us that watched Avengers: Infinity War understand half of the population of Wakanda, including King T’Challa, has been wiped out due to Thanos’ snap, and even though the Mad Titan may be able to turn back the clock with the Time Stone in his possession, he’s unable to take away the success that Black Panther had earlier this year. Besides making over $1.3 billion at the box office across the globe, which is much higher than early projections, it also was a humongous success in the eyes of fans and critics as a film. It’s not often that superhero movies earn the kind of praise the Ryan Coogler-directed film did.

Because of the critical success Black Panther has received, it was only natural for Disney and Marvel Studios to make an Oscar push for the film. When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that they would be adding the “Popular Film” category, many people figured that Black Panther would be a shoo-in for it. However, critics of the category’s addition have claimed that the separation of the popular films from the major categories is more troublesome than it was before. Indeed, a month after the introduction of this new section, the Academy declared that the “Popular Film” category would be put on hold for now and would not appear at the 91st Academy Awards next year. That said, Disney is still going after the biggest prizes for Black Panther.

Below we’ve provided a list for every Academy Awards category Disney has submitted Black Panther for:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director
  • Best Adapted Screenplay
  • Best Actor
  • Best Supporting Actor
  • Best Supporting Actress
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Production Design
  • Best Costume Design
  • Best Makeup & Hairstyling
  • Best Sound Mixing
  • Best Sound Editing
  • Best Visual Effects
  • Best Original Score

Will we finally get a film in our beloved genre to win one of the big prizes? Only time will tell, but we’ve finally got a critical darling to root for, and that’s a start. Regardless of how great superhero films are, it’s going to take one to be the first, and why not Black Panther?
