Ever since 2013, Fox has been eyeing the possibility of an X-Force film, hiring director, and writer Jeff Wadlow to work on it. The project lost steam after a while, and others took precedent until the success of 2016’s Deadpool.
Actor Ryan Reynolds spoke with FilmStarts during press for his first run as the Merc with a Mouth, stating that X-Force would be the eventual priority. “I really want to get that in,” Reynolds had said.
Deadpool 2 screenwriter and producer Rhett Reese was interviewed by Cinema Blend about a possible future film involving the X-Force team saying that, “we’re trying to set up the characters that will be in that next movie. But that’s not our first goal.”
He was very clear in saying that the project at hand was the main focus. Otherwise, the production would fall into a “trap.”
Regardless of whether or not an X-Force movie is confirmed to be in the works, there are some factors such as Cable’s appearance within the first trailer that make the project more of a certainty. In the comicbooks, Cable would mentor The New Mutants, eventually leading them to become the first incarnation of the X-Force, a mutant team that deals with threats in extreme ways, prompting the X-Men to view them with contempt and horror.
