David Leitch Discusses New ‘Fast And Furious’ Spinoff Being ‘More Grounded’

There was once a time where the characters in The Fast and The Furious films were simply street racers hellbent on breaking the law for the rush of adrenaline in their souped-up cars, stocked up with a fresh tank of nitrous. Sure, Dominic Toretto and his crew were also moonlighting as thieves who were stealing electronics by robbing semi-trucks in the same cars they were racing with, but it was about family, teamwork, and racing.

Nowadays, Toretto and crew are full-blown military experts taking on missions to save the world from terrorists with nuclear weapons. It’s a far cry from where we started, but hey, at least they’re still including a little bit of racing and awesome cars, right? While they may have upped the stakes from the original film, there’s one thing that all of them have in common… They’re entertaining, even if some of the plot lines are preposterous.

With the Fast universe being as action-packed as it is, the additions of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham were huge gets. They’re both incredible action stars in their own right, and adding to them to the Fast franchise only boosted the appeal of the movies. Now Universal Studios is hoping that their star power, along with Deadpool 2‘s David Leitch direction, will take the Fast franchise forward with the Hobbs and Shaw spinoff.

During an interview with Collider, Leitch spoke about building a story around The Rock and Statham’s characters…

“I think it’s going to be a little bit more grounded because it’s the beginning. It’s an origin story, in a sense. It’s not an origin story, but we’re starting a franchise. So we want it to be a little bit more grounded, a little bit more character-centric.

We’re diving into their world. I think we want to have our own take on the Fast universe. It will definitely have elements of the original DNA, but it is more drifting into Shaw’s spy world and Dwayne’s agent world and, obviously, we want to build on their relationship, their conflict, their banter. That chemistry that they have between them, that’s sort of what’s driving the movie.”

If Leitch’s work on John Wick, Atomic Blonde, and Deadpool 2 is any indication of what we’re in for, it’s definitely going to be a treat. There is currently no release date for the film set. We’ll bring you more info when it becomes available.
