WARNING – Spoilers For Avengers: Infinity War Below
Fans of the Guardians of the Galaxy were head over heels when director James Gunn announced that there would be a third installment of the franchise. Prior to the success of Guardians of the Galaxy, there were a lot of skeptics out there that believed this group of intergalactic superheroes was too risky for the growing Marvel Cinematic Universe. While a clever marketing scheme may have put fans in the seats back in 2014, the film kept them there. Fast forward to today and the group is every bit as popular with fans of the MCU as the Avengers are.
After the events that transpired during Avengers: Infinity War, it’s hard to imagine there being anymore Guardians of the Galaxy films. First of all, we lost Gamora when Thanos sacrificed her life in order to acquire the Soul Stone on Volmir by throwing her off of a cliff. Then, after completing his mission by gathering all six Infinity Stones and snapping his fingers, we sat and watched as almost everyone on the team vanished in front of our eyes. Mantis, Drax, Star-Lord, and then Groot… Gone! The only Guardian left is Rocket, and as amazing as he is, how are we supposed to move forward with a GotG film with only him?
These events didn’t stop Chris Pratt from confirming that filming for Volume 3 starts in 2019 when he wished Mantis, rather Pom Klementieff, a happy birthday on his Instagram page…
What does this say about Avengers 4? Does this mean everyone is coming back? Maybe just part of the team? Or, since there was a four-year gap between Volume 2 and Infinity War, do they go back and explore those times? With so many characters presumed deceased after Infinity War, it’s hard to believe that Marvel Studios has a bunch of prequel-style films lined up, especially considering Black Panther and Spider-Man just started being explored.
Only time will tell exactly what happens, but we’ll be lined up and ready to figure it out when Avengers 4 hits theaters next year!
