Carol Danvers, AKA Captain Marvel, is easily one of the most powerful characters in the history of Marvel Comics. This is why it’s only right that she will be getting her turn in the spotlight in the next phase of the cinematic universe, as well as on pages of comicbooks, in the next few months.
This Summer, Marvel plans on kicking off their relaunch initiative which includes Avengers by Jason Aaron, Captain America by Ta-Nahisi Coates, Venom by Donny Cates, and yes, The Life of Captain Marvel by Margaret Stohl!
The goal with this retelling of Carol Danvers’ origin story isn’t to reinvent the wheel and the character entirely, but to tell it from a different perspective to shed new light on this incredibly complex hero.
The Life of Captain Marvel #1 is slated to hit comicbook store shelves on June 4th with Margaret Stohl writing the story, and Carlos Pacheco illustrating the comic. Major parts of Danvers’ origin are promised to stay intact as keystones in her life, which thankfully includes the Kree bloodline she has. Other points, however, may change slightly to allow Captain Marvel to appear more vulnerable and relatable (including crippling anxiety,) which is hard to do when you are a hard-hitting heroine.
Margaret Stohl seems pretty pumped to be able to get her version of Captain Marvel’s story out before the film slams home in 2019 with actress Brie Larson taking the lead. The aim is to branch off slightly, making this a stand-alone special as opposed to a word for word retelling of what we already know.
