Over the past few years, the Star Wars Universe has expanded to include even more stories than once before. Not that we were ever without tales from outside of the trilogies, but now is a special time for the franchise. It seems like Disney and Lucasfilm are opening the floodgates in terms of stand-alone stories centered around some of our favorite characters of the past. The origin stories could be a new way to really tap into what fans want, as long as their done with respect to the history and actors who originally played them.
First up is Solo: A Star Wars Story, which centers on the one and only Han Solo. This film opened in theaters this week, May 25th to be exact, and although it had some major issues during production, it’s been receiving positive reviews from fans and critics alike. We went into full detail about its production issues in another article, which you can READ HERE, but they righted the ship and look to be having a successful weekend at the box office.
Off of the positive reviews of not only Solo but the character in general, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has already stated their intentions to do a film based around Lando Calrissian. Donald Glover also expressed interest in playing the character again. This is on top of the long-rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi film that fans have been clamoring for for years. We’ll ask the question that everyone seems to want an answer to… Can we get an origin story for Yoda?
While all of these films could and would be amazing, the news of the day centers around Boba Fett, the bounty hunter we first met in the original trilogy working for both Darth Vader and Jabba the Hut. The fact they plan on making a film based on him isn’t even the most exciting part, it’s who is now on board to helm the film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Mangold has signed on to both write and direct the film. The promise of having the man who co-wrote and directed Logan to handle this film is enough to make any Marvel or Star Wars fan rush to the theaters when it opens.
