As we move forward into Phase 4 of the MCU, some of us are excited to go full speed ahead into a new era. However, some of us can’t help but think, “Remember the simpler times? When the universe wasn’t in shambles?” The answer to that technically rhetorical question is “yes.” Yes, we do remember the simpler times in the MCU. So, to go with that wish for nostalgia, here are some behind-the-scenes photos from the series that started it all, the Iron Man films. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the inventions and attitude of Tony Stark. These photos give us a little idea of the work it took to make the MCU as grand as it is today!
While it’s no secret that much of the Iron Man suit stunts are done with CGI, it may not have been known that some of the scenes had the suit-wearers simply wearing some motion capture sensors, like pictured here in Iron Man 2. We wish that Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle were really flying around defeating bad guys, but at least we know that they were on location (blue screen included) in the fight scenes, acting out the motions.
Jon Favreau had no trouble pulling double duty as director and actor in the first two Iron Man films. This coaching moment between him and RDJ was during a pivotal Iron-Man-suit-inventing scene.
The skies are not always skies in the Iron Man series, as you can see here. This scene from Iron Man 2 has Happy Hogarth and Tony Stark on the private airstrip, at least in the final cut of the film. Behind the scenes, however, we can see that it is actually just the two actors, a car, a couple of crew members, and a green screen.
